RE: White House May Veto Collective Bargaining Bill
The Administration has finally engaged in their opposition to our efforts to pass a National Collective Bargaining Bill. While we have always anticipated and expected the President to ultimately oppose our initiative, our suspicions became a reality today.
A joint letter signed by Secretary of Homeland Security Chertoff, Labor Secretary Chao, and Attorney General Mukasey weighed in against HR 980/S 2123. In a strongly- worded letter, they attacked our proposal on three independent grounds:
1. An unwarranted federal intrusion on states' rights;
2. Jeopardizing national/Homeland Security;
3. Constitutionality
This obviously creates another hurdle in our attempts to pass this legislation. It is imperative that we assure our membership is engaged in making the necessary phone calls to our supporters, particularly on the Republican side, to ensure that they remain steadfast in their support of our position.
We encourage each of you to contact the leadership and Locals within your State and/or sphere of influence to encourage their activism and engagement in our grass roots efforts.
We will distribute to you the above-referenced letter along with a copy of the General President's rebuttal letter when it is sent.
In the United States Senate, the day we have been waiting for has arrived. It is likely that the Senate will vote on the IAFF’s initiative establishing a National Collective Bargaining Law across the Country. That vote is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
"Support your fire fighters and police officers. We ask that you support Senator Judd Gregg's Public Safety Cooperation Act S.2123. The vote likely will be Tuesday morning."
Each affiliate and member is being asked to call Senator Spector’s office with that message. The National Right to Work group and others are really working hard to stop this legislation.
We ask (1) that you make the appropriate calls and send a corresponding email, (2) ask your respective executive board members to do likewise, (For local president) disseminate this e mail to your members and ask them to reach out as well.Please call (202) 224-3121 and ask for your U.S Senators and then go to http://www.senate.gov/ and look up your senators to send them an e-mail in favor of cloture on S 2123.

Additionally We need YOU to contact your DEMOCRATIC Senator (s) and implore them to return to Washington and vote for S 2123. We need every Democratic Senator there and voting correctly to prevail.
Please call (202) 224-3121 and ask for your U.S Senators and then go to http://www.senate.gov/ and look up your senators to send them an e-mail in favor of cloture on S 2123.
The Hyatt in Philadelphia is asking that all locals registered for rooms at the Hyat for the PPFFA Convention on May 14, 15 and 16 contact the Hyatt immediatlely to confirm the number of rooms necessary for your local and to make sure that you have the correct names on the room reservations. Many affilaites have one name for two or three rooms and they are requesting that names on the actual reservation match the occupants. This will help them at check in.
Also, if you have any rooms that you do not need, the hotel has a need to accommodate MDA families and staff. Please call Paul at 215-521-6561 to provide information.
